Zadar is the administrative, cultural, tourist and sport center of the county. The old city center is situated on a peninsula, while the economic center is located along the coast. Good traffic connection, pleasant climate, luxuriant vegetation and numerous cultural and historical monuments attract a great number of domestic and foreign tourists. For a century, Zadar was the capital of Dalmatia, today it is the region center. It is a city with a rich cultural heritage of world importance which can easily be spotted around the old part of the town: Roman forum from the 1st century, St. Donat’s church from the 9th century (the best-known medieval basilica and a trademark of the city), restored Romanesque church St. Krševan from the 12th century and St.Marija’s church-tower built in 1105, St. Anastazija’s cathedral from the 13th century, National square with Municipal Loggia and guardhouse from the 16th century and powerful defensive walls with the representative port gate and land gate from the 16th century, squares Trg pet bunara and Trg tri bunara and numerous palaces, villas and other monuments.
Zadar is attractive partly because of its position in the center of the Adriatic coast surrounded with four national parks: the Plitvice lakes, the mountain park Paklenica, unique waterfalls of the river Krka and a great number of beautiful islands called Kornati. Nature parks are also very attractive: Telašćica, the canyon of the karst river Zrmanja and the largest natural lake in Croatia – Vransko jezero near Biograd. It is possible to come to the center of the Zadar riviera from all directions and by all means of transportation. From new attractions in Zadar we can point out Sea Organs (played by the sea waves) and Greeting to the Sun (as a spatial installation in form of an amphitheater surrounded by a stylized display of all Solar System planets and their orbits).
